  1. The white Belk lettering of the interior shot blends better with Proffitt's green than the black Belk signage of the exterior.

Biltmore Square has never been a strong performer, so regardless of whether it's a Belk or a Proffitt's, the future for the mall is cloudy. Ashevill Mall was able to renovate and expand and retain its market leadership due to its more central location. The decline of Innsbruck Mall has help Biltmore Square carry on over the years.

  2. I think the signs on this store were recycled from the other Belk that was at the mall. That could explain why they didn't match.

  3. How long do you think this store [and mall] will last... what's the future of B'more Square in your opinion?

  4. Can't speak for the Belk, but Dillard's is having success with the Clearance Center there after moving the NC clearance center there from Eastland in Charlotte.

If Dillard's had closed altogether as they had planned to do last year, it would be dead already. Belk wouldn't have stayed as the lone anchor.

  5. cantnot: Belk can likely survive by itself next to a dead mall, as it has in other markets like Eden, NC, but if the mall closes I can't image they'll stick around more than a year or so.

Brian: I heard from another source that Dillard's closed this Clearance Center. Is it still open?

  6. I heard Dillard's CC closed too, not 100% sure on it.

PS Eden is soooo weird, in a twilight zone sort of way.

  7. It was still open a couple of weeks ago, sent a friend there on his way thru. It's still on the Dillard's website as well, and they pull those down the day of closing.

It also wasn't listed on the annual or quarterly report as closed and their phone is still connected. I'm driving thru there on Thursday on the way to Columbia, so I'll check it out.

  8. cantnot: I need to get shots of Eden Mall. It's pretty much frozen in time, especially Belk. Imagine going 30 years without a remodel, not even a minor one!

Brian: I'll take your word that it's still open based on the information, but tell me what it's like if you go through there, if you would.

  9. What strikes me about this store is that it was built/remodeled with a Parisian-style template. Look at the columns and the arch in the first picture. That's a textbook Parisian entry. If I didn't know the store's history, I'd swear it once was one.

  10. I guess Proffitt's was going for a Parisian look. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
