  1. Love that vintage view! The bulbs in the ceiling are great!

  2. Keith over at Malls of America found the older shot, and I had to repost it here when I got some updated Macon Mall pictures.

The older shot is from the older (circa 1975) part of the mall, while the newer shot I think is from the newer portion of the mall that was added through Penney's in the 1990s.

  3. JC Penney seems to have a history of constructing bland monoliths. The 1973 edificie here in Mobile looks almost government-issued.

Somewhat off-topic: How do I go about sending you, Steve, a submission? :)

  4. Agreed. Penney architects sure knew how to work a theme, but it wasn't always pretty.

Send your submissions to stevesblog AT gmail DOT com with the subject line "LiveMalls" and please keep photo sizes to 640x480 or thereabout. A location and brief description of the photo(s) is always appreciated.

  5. Now Penney's is getting a "face-lift" aka a face down. Just getting a smaller label scar I'd say.

  7. I worked at that JC Penny from 1976 to 1979 or so. I worked for Bill Morrison in display and advertising and did a lot of the mannequin and displays for the store. It was a lot of fun. Every Friday night a lot of us would head over to Grand Central Station and close that place down. The owner's name was Ed, can't remember his last name, the manager was Carlos and the bartenders were Darinda and Cricket. I had a huge crush on Cricket's daughter back then.

  8. As of April,2016 MACON MALL is still around but has lost many if not MOST of it's customers to nearby Eisenhower Crossing shopping center on Presidential-just to the west & THE Shoppes at RIVER CROSSING in the UPSCALE North Macon area.

  9. Oh man, this brings back memories. Used to visit the Macon mall quite often back in the mid to late 90's. Hot Topic, Spencers Gifts, EB Games, the arcade with Crazy Taxi... I haven't been back state side in years, but I've heard the mall had died and was being brought back to life. I hear it's doing so-so now, last I heard maybe like fifteen stores were open. I hope I heard wrong, I'd love for this classic mall to stay around for many years to come.
